The Evolution of Celebrity Silhouette & Celebrity Reflection

In 2008 Celebrity Cruise Line debuted the first ship in its new Solstice class and the reviews were unanimous…this was a job well done.  Accolades were given to her crisp modern design, use of space and innovation.  So why fix what’s not broken when rolling out her successors?   According to Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Dan Hanrahan, “We recognize that consumer’s vacation time is precious, and that’s what drives us to continually create new and unique experiences that enhance their rare time away.”  That is exactly what you will see aboard the two new Solstice class ships; Celebrity Silhouette and the Celebrity Reflection.

A significant change to the two new ships will be an update to what Mr. Hanrahan calls the “underutilized” Lawn Club. With the goal being to extend the frequency and length of visits to the area, new dining venues and experiences are being introduced.  “The Porch” will be an alternative to the Oceanview CafĂ©, serving up complimentary breakfast and lunch.  In addition there will be a bar that features specialty coffee, beer and wine for sale.  Its casually chic and comfortably modern design will have magnificent views of both the lawn and the sea.

The Corning Glass Museum is being replaced with a multi purpose site called “The Lawn Club Grill” (the Corning Glass Museum and demonstrations will remain on the Solstice, Equinox, and Eclipse).  During the day this area will host fun, interactive demos and classes.  Scheduled activities may include hands on cooking like making a pizza, or chef-led demonstrations such as “marinade 101”.  By night “The Lawn Club Grill”, as the name suggests, celebrates the passion of grilling!  Gleaming stainless steel grills, an open kitchen, and a large glass door fridge where you can choose your own meat help to make this a highly social and interactive experience.  There will even be the option of grilling along side the chef!  Beverage features will include wine, buckets of beer and pitchers of sangria.  There is a $30 per person charge.

“The Art Studio”, also located within the area of the Lawn Club, allows a guest to participate in drawing, painting and beading instructions.  Aimed at art enthusiasts and culturally savvy guests, there will also be the opportunity to tie the onboard experience to an off ship excursion.  Picture it as a gathering point to meet an expert, and then go beyond the ship to perhaps sketch the Parthenon!  Culinary classes, the popular mixology lessons, amongst others, will be held here too.

“The Alcoves” are rentable cabana style private retreats, again sharing views of the lawn and sea.  By day you can curl up with a good book or your lap top (they’re WiFi connected) and order a picnic basket for munching and whiling the day away.  Nearby you can get comfy on one of the oversized Adirondack chairs or catch a quick nap in an enveloping hammock while taking in the fresh salt air.

Look for a change in Michael’s Club on the Silhouette and Reflection.  This sophisticated room is evolving into a craft beer bar with the addition of 50 international beer selections including ales, lagers, lambics, ciders, wheat beers and beer cocktails. The freshly made snacks such as flavored potato chips, parmesan breadsticks and lightly spiced caramel popcorn are a perfect accompaniment.  Sporting events will be shown on the TV’s and some evenings will showcase live music. Through the Celebrity Life Beer Series guests can learn how to pour the perfect draft or the secrets of selecting the proper beer glass.

Team Earth, the conservation exhibit on the first three Solstice class ships, is being replaced with what will be called “The Hideaway”.  The tree house atmosphere is a soothing and relaxing retreat for reading, sipping coffee or just quiet contemplation.

The Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Reflection are the culmination of Solstice Class style.  Based on guest feedback and venue popularity Celebrity continues to innovate and evolve in both design and experiential elements.  The Celebrity Silhouette will debut in Europe in the summer of 2011 sailing Mediterranean and Holy Land itineraries.  After her transatlantic voyage in October she will cruise to the Caribbean from Cape Liberty, New Jersey.  The Celebrity Reflection will debut in the fall of 2012."
